Calgary International Airport

That’s down to pre-crash YEG levels. Yikes.

Kelly Cryderman of the Globe & Mail spent a day at Calgary airport recently. At it's low during the emergency lockdown, traffic was down to 300 passengers per day. Recently it has been up to 1000 per day. Average per day ... pre-COVID ... 25,000 per day! Now and going forward, air travel will not be a pleasant experience with all of the new procedures and restrictions. For example, during temperature checks, if you test high, they can prevent you from taking your flight. Unless, insurance companies are going to include that in flight cancellation causes (if they do, probably at a huge premium), then you are out of pocket. A lot of people are going to think twice about flying, particularly out of the country.
In her discussions with airport and airline officials, they are projecting it will take 2-3 years for the industry to recover to normal levels.
 
Tentatively looked at flying up to Fort McMurray and back instead of driving myself this time...still charging over $400...that’s a nope.
 
A couple of the aviation unions have set up a website advocating for testing on arrival to replace quarantines. There's a form that allows people to quickly and easily submit a letter to their MPs. For those who'd like to see YYC boost its international traffic figures again, take a few minutes and send a letter!

Until the results of the pilot test are in, this is rather pointless. If it is a success I doubt it won’t be nearly immediately expanded.
 
Optimistic news today, WestJet announced nonstop flights from YYC-AMS on their 787's, twice per week starting on August 5th, then increasing to 3 times per week in September. They will be competing with KLM so let's hope their is enough market share for the both of them to have success on this route.


This puts WestJets YYC -> Europe routes at

YYC - Paris (seasonal)
YYC - London Gatwick (year round)
YYC - Rome (seasonal)
YYC - Dublin (seasonal)
YYC - Amsterdam (seasonal)

Lets hope ones things begin to return to normal that we can possibly secure some other routes as well! (YYC - Barcelona, Athens, Lisbon, Heathrow, and a handful of others are always rumoured!)
 
Nice to see Westjet hit some more routes in Europe, though they'll be competing with KLM. Having the extra capacity to AMS may also induce more demand as people in other cities may choose to use Westjet through Calgary, rather than say, AC to Vancouver or Toronto and then onto AMS.

Yeah, super connecting the USA SW for those not loyal to either Delta/KLM or United plus induced demand. TBH wouldn't be going to Paris soon if they weren't running the direct flight.
