There's been talks of replacing the Saddledome for almost 2 decades. If it was expected to last much longer, I would think they would've redid the entrance area to have an entertainment square.
My point is more the seamless integration between the arena itself and the street facing elements (market, coffee shop, restaurants, team store, cocktail bar). SP design is that on 2 full sides of the building, you'd barely know an arena is there walking the sidewalk. It's an impossible thing to "add later", you need the mindset from day 1 of design.

says in here the flames get the keys to the arena may 2027

Certainly checks out, 30 months of construction. Could see a series of June concerts to test, before Stampede. When he says, the renderings do not do it justice, that gets me excited. I was up at Rogers Place last month, and my goodness I dislike that place more every time I go. Bland, bland, bland.

Apparently this was done a while ago and the reasons they didn't announce it was because the team was doing bad. I don't know if this management team just has a really bad grasp of the fan base? I think the vast majority wanted Conroy to extend and did not want whatever Maloney said last week. But they seem to want to keep the facade of competing, while being committed to a rebuild (I hope).

In the recent CNBC franchise valuations, Flames were 17, just above Minnesota and Colorado, and just below Tampa and Carolina. The fact that we are still in this group of extremely successful teams, with the team we have, there's definitely financial room to tank, just need an owner that's willing. Edmonton is 5th, sandwiched between huge markets like LA, Boston, Chicago. That should show the upside

What does it matter to the average fan what the value of the team is? Shows that the team should have invested their own money in building the new arena. Tax payer dollars just raises the value of a privately owned team. For what the government(s) invested into the arena it should be granted an equal equity stake into the team. If not we’re just making rich people richer with public money

Honestly I think sometimes this franchise needs to try the George Costanza strategy, and do the opposite of every instinct they might have. In what world do they think what this fanbase really wants is for them to fight their way back to another 9th place finish?

I don't have much faith till Murray Edwards is no longer the owner, but glad that atleast Conroy is staying around.

Keep in mind those valuations reflect recent data, not a holistic franchise worth...The Oilers are only that high because of the Cup Final appearence, and the massive revenue that comes with that. Notice they have higher revenue than the leafs, which is only possible with a cup final scenario. If they are to miss the playoffs or lose early, they are likely back to 12/13/14 range

Losing McDavid would be a big hit to their franchise values. The point was the Flames would realistic only fall to 20 even in a full rebuild. And franchises surrounding them are spending to the cap cup contenders. The idea that Calgary is a small market that can't spend to the cap or can't fully rebuild just isn't right.

A new arena will affect the Flames valuation as well, the Saddledome may have sentimental value, but is a hinderance to the business side of the franchise at this point.

Can we trade Flames Ownership for that dryer Sydney Crosby used to practice as a kid? probably worth more and wont stand in the way of actually improving the franchise!
