General Construction Updates

Could it have been because of the revitalization of the Core mall? Drawing a bunch of patrons away to a more central location...?
No, it was in decline before that. I think it could have done well with more curation and patient capital (lower rents). The Imax theatre generated constant foot traffic and should have been subsidized as an anchor, instead it left when Chinook was renovated. Having visited Winnipeg's Forks Market in 2005, 2011, and 2018, and seeing it go from sad to destination over that time (run by Canada Lands or some other federal entity I think?), I am confident that the city didn't really know what it was doing when developing and running the project in partnership, and never gave the market the mandate, and funding to be what it needed to be.

Marda Loop Main Streets update. Telephone poles on 34th Ave are gone. 33rd and 34th are back to two way streets. Looks like the majority of the work on 33rd is done as well as the South portion of 34th.

You just know that one pole is staying because it provides power to a street light... oh man, all that work and there's still a pole of shame.

What's hilarious about that bump out in the photos above is that it was done to avoid cutting down two mature trees. Then they determined that the trees had to be cut down because of poor health (why they didn't determine that before detailed design, I'll never understand). So now we have this weird deviation in the pathway, and lost 2-3 on-street parking spots to save trees that they cut down anyways. Ideally, the City redoes this section next summer to straighten things up, but I doubt it.

When plans with a high level of detail go to council, the institutional culture, enforced by council calling out admin when plans aren't followed, is that changes require going back to council. So even if things don't make sense anymore, unless the change is needed, or not making the change will result in failure, the change is not made.

So who do I contact about the pole of shame, that wasn't in the plan.

Awesome, i didn't realise that was the multi use lane. I would have preferred a dedicated bike lane but what can ya do. Im assuming the city will be doing the snow clearing on this then?
The latest plans on the website show a two way bike path next to a sidewalk from 22 St to 20 St, and a multi-use pathway the rest of the way.

Hopefully they clear the snow but that was something they didn't commit to during the info sessions.

Nice, something to point out on a future historic walking tour lol
