The problem with 1st Street is well documented too - it doesn't feel that way to drivers or politicians.

"Putting a bike lane on MacLeod Trail" is seen as one of the most out-of-touch things someone can do, despite this 10 block stretch having the excess capacity for vehicles, high demand for bikes, and having nothing in common to the suburban car sewer that is in everyone's collective memory of "MacLeod Trail".

That's enough to kill it - anti-bike south Calgary suburban Councilors can always find a way to rally against it.
An unfortunate downside of having the large unicity model that Calgary has.
 
This image from today's announcement makes me think this could be the last Stampede 17th will be closed to vehicles. They'll need to be able to maintain access to the hotel and its loading docks on the southside pf the building. Not that this portion of Stampede Park-ing lot was well used but the Park is shrinking and the chairlift is definitely going away. End of an era.

I'm also thinking of Stampede Trail and how the businesses that eventually open up will, I assume, want to be off the grounds so I'm sure that will shrink things the slightest bit more. They could also extend the gates to include Stampede Trail in front of Scotia Fire Place? probably not though.

I actually haven't seen the gate setup this year yet so maybe the gate has already shifted down 17th.

Couldn't they open 17th just in the early morning during Stampede for loading? Using small loading vehicles (Think USP van) they don't need to clear very much space to get in.
With so much room on either side of the road, what's the point?

I also see there's a cycle track on the southside of 17th in the render. Imagine, a cycletrack from here to Westbrook station...
