I wouldn't be surprised if the Oilers simply declined the opportunity to host the world cup as they have in the past with the NHL All Star Game when they made the excuse that they want the area around their arena to be more developed first. CSEC going after this event only 7-8 months after opening shows they aren't worried about such stuff.

The 4 Nations was hosted in Boston and Montreal because of distance and they wanted minimal disruption to the NHL schedule, hence the extremely short tournament. It's much harder to host events in those big cities because Toronto has 1 arena, which has to host the Raptors, Leafs, concerts, and other events. Same with many of the other cities with multiple teams and events. They may have the semi-final/final in MSG or Scotiabank Arena, but Calgary gives much better flexibility for round robin and earlier games.

Especially with the Saddledome still around to put games in too. It’s like having two cities.
