The Hyatt has been an awkward one from the start. It's like a weird French chateaux done in the style of the sandstone/western heritage theme of Stephen Ave....but without the skill/materials/budget to really pull it off. I don't think time has helped it either. I much prefer the Sheraton Eau Claire from that era. While definitely "of it's time" as well, it was a stronger effort.

Speaking of hotels though, I was going past the Le Germain the other day...and it kind of reminded me of what a nice development that is. The material choices on that building feel so much higher quality than a lot of what has been built after.

Speaking of Le Germain, heard from a podcast recently that the roof is curved to satisfy the shadowing requirements for Stephen Avenue.

Here's a an aerial photo off Livewire from March 17th:

Looks like we missed each other by a few hours! I attended a CSEC event for season ticker holders that was supposed to be all about introducing them to Scotia Place. There have been more renderings and videos shared on this forum than were shared at the event and far more detailed information shared here as well. So kudos to all of our contributors!

The only two interesting tidbits I picked up from the event was that something special is being planned for the sections immediately behind the nets ("Think Seattle Seahawks 12th man, it's going to be the envy of the NHL") and that CSEC is currently finalizing plans for a Scotia Place Experience Suite which will be invite only and have mock-ups of the seats, private boxes, loge tables etc... that will be used in the new arena as well as a 7 foot by 7 foot 3D model so people can interact with all the planned elements and provide feedback.

I'd like access to that invite-only Experience Suite. Any interest in splitting season tickets for next season?

I'd rather see a statue of Lanny holding the cup.

With Lanny not being a young man, this needed to happen yesterday. Maybe too close to the MAGA man's statue in Edmonton but fuck it, we'll do it better. Lanny has done something the other guy didn't do, stick around town and raise his family here. Truly a Calgary icon. This is the floor of what the organization and city should do for that man and they should do it while he's still around to appreciate our thanks.

General advice is to only make statues and name things after real people after they pass so their legacy can be defined with a bit more certainty and clarity. There's plenty of ways to honour someone who is still alive through awards, jersey raising etc. Nothing is perfect because people and symbols are in constant state of being redefined.

Got a dumb construction question: where do they put all the dirt they dig up? Is there a small hill somewhere where all of downtown Calgary's basement excavations are stored? Seems like a pretty big pile of dirt they'd create for this arena!
