Calgary International Airport

Mexico City would be a good connection point to Latin America. I flew the old Mexicana flight to Mexico City 15 or so years ago. Their flight loads were actually quite good, the main reason it failed is Mexicana went under not long afterwards.

Also, it's a really cool city, and well worth a visit for those who haven't been. A very different experience from the tourist traps like Cancun, PV, Cabo etc.

We used to, on both WS and Aeromexico. Both failed and were cancelled not to long after starting. MEX lacks the vacation traffic that other Mexican cities have, so in the past YYC-MEX has been a tougher route to keep alive.

I imagine now that Westjet's YYC hub is much larger, they'll be able to sustain good enough passenger loads for it to work.
My only hope is that they did in fact somehow obtain slots at MEX and not NLU, as that would pose a whole new challenge.
They were running plenty of pax YYC-PVR-MEX, so perhaps proved the market again?

It’s 5x weekly on Sun, Mon, Wed, Thu and Fri. There’s a few weeks where it’s only 4x.

It’s also loaded year-round too.

WS2200 YYC 19:45 - 00:58+1 MEX
WS2215 MEX 01:55 - 07:15 YYC

It’s timed with connections in mind, and not very ideal for someone who’s just headed for Mexico City.
I guess they must be predicting more connecting passengers than direct on this route?

I would have preferred AM instead of WS - they provide a complimentary premium service for all international flights and include baggage fees even for economy.

Was excited to book a 4-5 day trip to check out CDMX on this route, then saw the times. Nope!

if any airline could open us a flight to beijing , shanghai or Hongkong , i will book it for sure even it is 2:00 am...
The most likely airline at this stage to do that would be Hainan - they did Beijing to Calgary pre-covid. Although now PEK slots are harder to come by, and Canada has restrictions on Chinese airlines, so who knows.

A lot of transpacific flights leave around midnight to line up with onwards connections because you arrive around 5-7 am.

Those limits have been scrapped.

yeah, what i heard is they still need to keep flights number balanced . but WestJet don't have enough capacity to open more flights from YYC to China, so they wont allow Hainan airline resume from PEK to YYC ......

It shouldn't be on a per airport basis even if it's true. Toronto to China is mainly served by Chinese airlines without an Air Canada route. It's probably more for commercial reasons that the bilateral pax numbers are just much lower than pre pandemic.
