Not liking the trend of these low rise buildings with these heavy fascia, parapet and guardrail bands.

It’s not great for the interior of the units either, they block a lot of reflected light and when seated at a living area all you see is a solid wall out your patio door.

Interesting observation. Are these there for increased exterior space (patios)? What else could be in it's place? I suppose just a glass guardrail?

I’d garner its intent is part exterior design composition and part privacy. I myself would rather be wide open and control my own privacy with shades when I need it.
