What is Justin Trudeau?
Something something, ordering enough planes to justify building a facility to meet delivery time frames versus their current both side of the rockies suboptimal but already exists production process.

Roll some new (and the existing) firefighting planes under the Canadian Forces and all of sudden you're closer to the NATO 2%. I'm sure some other Government of Canada airplanes could use a refresh.. Add them in and maybe call this a defense contract and you're getting closer and closer to the 2%.

Skyalyne is buying 3 New but already built Q400's that Dehaviland had in storage for military training aircraft. But yes, the government should be looking at ways to support Canadian businesses when increasing defence spending.

Went searching for a recent news story on De Haviland Field and this is all I came up with:

Any “insiders” on here that can update the status ?

Had a friend interview for a job with them recently and they’ve stated that they still plan on moving to the new site within a couple years. But I haven’t seen any progress on starting construction in quite awhile.

Rumour is there was to be a procurement package supported by the feds for the provinces fleet in the fall, but it coincidentally cost the same amount at the 'border' plan announced to placate the trump administration. Then it couldn't come as trudeau resigned, and now the election. I suspect it will be this fall?

There is also, why would this be built at all if Alberta separates?

Wow, I had no idea this plan was out there... Really hope it goes through!

Now if Canada wanted a viable alternative or complement to the F35, get Boeing Canada to setup a neighboring facility to start cranking out superhornet frames and ghost bat drones..

Keep Boeing as far away from me as possible.

Any stories to share? I know their airliners don't have the greatest rep these days, but I also thought that had more to do with poor maintenance by the operators. As a vaguely informed outsider I hear their defense division is well run?

While I'm dreaming about Calgary's new aerospace alley, how about also bringing in Embraer for a C390 production line, and maybe some itar-free Gripens as supplemental fighters.

Round it out with a munitions manufacturer or two, Suffield training area isn't far away for live fire testing..

When they have been going through their issues over the last few years, I spent a lot of time consuming media that talked about how they got to where they are. In a field (aerospace manufacturing) of subsidies and really government propping up their domestic manufacturers Boeing is not much different than the others, except their assembly lines went from bottom up to top down issue identification and solution management. That was a cultural shift that occurred over time. I have complete trust in any aircraft that operates so I'm not not flying on a Boeing. I just want no part of Boeing's manufacturing culture here.

As an avgeek, I still like Boeing, but the culture shift over the years has been disappointing. There are quite a few documentaries and articles that discuss the culture change and usually it goes back to when Boeing bought MD, but adopted a lot of MD's culture. The old joke in the Aerospace world was that MD bought Boeing with Boeing's money.
