$500M for an MLS franchise? Damn! Are they doing that well financially?
lmao $500 mil for like the 16th best league in the world thats crazy
It's surprisingly high considering the revenues and attendance of the teams. I guess it's the norm in today's world of sport inflation. The first part of this Forbes article probably explains the inflated values.

Billionaires have long believed in the potential of MLS. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and entertainment mogul Philip Anschutz were among MLS’ original owners, and a slew of others—including Tepper, Morningstar founder Joe Mansueto (Chicago Fire, 2018) and Qualtrics’ Ryan Smith (Real Salt Lake, 2022)—have since gotten in the game and driven up team values.

“It’s less of a financial hurdle to control an MLS team than [in] some other sports, so you do see more people who can do it,” says Rosenthal, who is worth an estimated $1.3 billion. “But I think people love it. They want to be a part of the community and the trajectory.” Forbes estimates there are at least 19 billionaires or members of billionaire families who have key ownership stakes in MLS franchises.

Aside from it being something new and trendy, it does have a lot of potential being tied to the world's most popular sport. There's great potential combining the heavy duty bucks of US sports entertainment and the world's most popular game. Consider that Real Madrid's value is ranked behind 11 US sports franchises or that out of the world's top 50 most valued franchises, 7 are football clubs and the rest are American teams made up of all the NFL teams, and some baseball basketball teams.

Some estimates have the NBA expansion fee at around $5 billion so $500 million is less than it seems.

Isn't Calgary getting a similar treatment via the Rivers District CRL? This arena financing would be on top of that.
Calgary's similar amount is going to the convention centre, whereas the Edmonton Expo centre was a direct government grant.

It is all the same in the end, just different buckets.

Apparently they want to have the designs out for Stampede but no promises. The DP will be reviewed sometime around October - November.
so pretty much the timeline then we've been expecting. Formal construction sometime in the fall. We at least know the design is different, that much is confirmed.

article saying Aug 2026 completion...which i'm guessing is still a placeholder date....there is no feasible chance that is happening. Rogers started Mar 4, 2014 for a sept. 1 2016 turnover...we're 2 months behind that already, with still a few months to go before earth is turned.

As for public input on the design, Sharp said that there’s always an option for people to comment on the project, particularly through the development permit process. Lessons were learned with the last reveal, Sharp said.

Will the design be more well received? Sharp stayed mum on the details.

“I would say that I am looking forward to hearing what Calgarians think. My personal opinion is I like this one more,” she said.
