Calgary Retail Thread

About the only thing I buy at the Bay are underwear/socks/belts (and I tried and failed to buy a wallet). Browsing the rest of clothes is just too frustrating. They have a zillion brands, but very little of each brand, which means I have to tour an entire floor of the store to find a few shirts or pants or whatever to buy, and they're all going to fit differently. Although interestingly, I don't have that problem with Simon's. Their clothing selection is much more integrated, and enticing to browse.
 
Heard from word of mouth that with Hudson Bays restructuring they’ll be closing down their Sunridge, South Centre and (unfortunately) their Downtown location. Market Mall and Chinook will remain.

Nothing official yet however. Sunridge and South centre are one thing but Downtown would be a huge loss imo. I really hope they pull through this, despite being American owned they’re a huge part of this country’s history.

Edit: I’m fairly certain these choices are 100% final yet, but for Calgary these are the stores on the chopping block.

Someone should buy them and divide up their target audience. when you're everything, you're nothing. So concentrate on your bread and butter mens clothing, womens clothing, and housewares (or where ever they see a gap in the market). If they shift to minimal brick and motor and go online and advertise, or maybe utilize shopify as a partner. They can still be in the busiest malls in the country but I would only do I'd say clothing at malls and do everything else online. No one is buying housewares in person anymore.

I kinda hate most things about Canadian Tire...but it's also kinda my favourite store to visit (and I basically hate doing shopping in person). I feel like there could be some kind of fit under their umbrella with Sport Chek, Marks, etc. Would be nice for some of the Canadian identity things like the blankets to get back under a long time Canadian brand. Not sure what it would really look like though

That's interesting, definitely some synergies there. Hudson's Bay could be a good match for those other brands as a lifestyle brand and one that can bring in higher margin external brands.

I was thinking it would be cool to be a residential building, but it would have to be a situation where the exterior doesn't change. I would hate to see it covered in Hardie board.
 
Not sure if this was already posted here, but Breathe Outdoors (Campers Village) will be winding down. All Atmosphere stores are also closing to be integrated into Sport Chek locations.

Sucks to lose Breathe (though I'm not sure when I last went in person), but relatively recent adds of Sporting Life + Decathlon is probably a net positive in the grand scheme. SL is Canadian owned and Decathlon is French...while MEC is embarrassingly American owned
 
Decathlon is actively searching for ways to get out of some of their leases.

All stand alone atmosphere stores will be closed, however 16-18 new location are opening that are combination stores with Sportchek, similar to the store at Deerfoot Meadows.
 
I was at Southcentre recently and noticed they have Sporting Life, Decathlon AND Sport Chek. We were buying little league gear, and SC was the only choice - Decathlon's "team sports" section is smaller than what you would expect at a Canadian Tire. They had like 10 bats for sale, and many were the house brand with no certifications - what's the point?
 
Given that all of The Bays locations are almost all closing now, that would leave Chinook with 3 anchor tenant vacancies (Saks, The Bay, Nordstroms). I wonder what could fill the space? The Bay is almost the last of its kind, there isn't many options in Canada for big box stores left, Simons might be the only one.

I read above that Chinook is not losing its Bay (at least right away). And yeah, I also heard they might be getting a Simon's.
