With only a few more floors to go, it will not be long before the 31-storey Underwood Tower tops off from its site adjacent to Central Memorial Park. Designed by Zeidler BKDI Architects for Western Securities, Underwood Tower represents the long-awaited second phase counterpart to the 2009 Union Square tower next door.

Now rising at least 25 storeys above its two-storey retail podium which fronts onto 1 St SW, Underwood Tower will help return a significant amount of pedestrian vibrancy to the strip, vibrancy that was lost upon the demolition of all but one of the former Underwood Block buildings that these two towers have now replaced.

Clad in a mixture of glass and white and black spandrel, Underwood Tower will form a solid counterpart to its high-rise neighbour, the project to deliver upwards of 200 new residents into the neighbourhood.

Moving around to the front, work on the lower podium level appears to be moving along as well, with more glazing work having been installed since the time of our last update in July. Visible at the far right side of the frame, the retained heritage component has yet to undergo any serious work, its scaffolding still in position.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
