A month since our last update, and progress at the site of Underwood Tower has been moving along nicely, the 31-storey residential high-rise now standing at least 23 storeys above grade. The long-awaited second phase of the 2009 Union Square development, the current tower, designed by Zeidler BKDI Architects for Western Securities, will complete the project, to be finished in conjunction with the included heritage component, which is now underway as well.

Rising above a two-storey retail podium with frontage onto 1 St SW, the lower-level inclusion will help return some much-needed pedestrian vibrancy to the all-but demolished Underwood Block - a row of early 20th-century commercial buildings that once stood in place of today's Underwood Tower and its sibling.

Viewed above, the last remaining portion of the Underwood Block will undergo restoration work, the facade to be incorporated into the base of the project.

With cladding and glazing work now well underway, it will only be a matter of months before Underwood Tower tops off, and crews move inside to finish the interior spaces and podium level.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
