Weather and Gardening Discussion

I'd love it if we got more snow (but could do without the cold). Not only as an avid skier who has been pretty disappointed with the season so far, but I am now starting to get nervous about an early and bad fire season, unless we get a lot more snow.

The long range for the next two weeks is colder than normal. If March is going to be colder than normal, let’s hope April is warmer than usual and we spring into Spring.

This weather transition be like….

Anyone here grow ferns? Want to try growing a couple of them this summer, curious how they do in Calgary.
Ostrich fern do well and will spread (and are native), needs shade and lots of moisture. There's a 'Ghost' Fern/Painted Fern, with whiteish fronds, it's a zone 4, so as long as you mulch it over for the winter it should keep. It doesn't spread as much. Lots of success with both if you keep them moist through the summer. They look good with some broad leafed perennials, take a look at bugloss too.

Definitely feel like winter has loosened it's grip and it might actually be spring. This is Calgary though, false spring is nearly guaranteed! haha
Our false spring already happened. Almost all of February was above freezing and the ground even started thawing before the return to deep freeze in the last few days of the month, lasting until like a week ago. The 2-week forecast has us pretty reliably between 3 and 7 degrees. We can safely say spring is here, regardless of if a few more snowfalls happen.
