Urban farming in Calgary

^^^
Last year, I started my basement grow near the end of march. This year, I started earlier. Whether it's a good idea remains to be see. Half of my grow belongs to a next door neighbour in his 80s. We're Mutt and Jeff. He, a former market gardener from Bassano, and me, new to the game, a researcher.

I'm glad you enjoyed the front yard vegetable garden in Drumondville that I posted. The City of Calgary promotes this, subject to certain guidlines.

Success to all of us in this 2018 growing season.
I didn't know there were any guidelines to front yard gardening, but I guess it makes sense. I have put a few vegetable pots in the front yard. A house down the street from me has a rock garden in the front and it slopes downward facing south. I noticed that they've grown pumpkins and squash etc, in amongst their flowers.

I usually start the seeds around mid-March, but was so busy this year, I never got to it until the end of March.

Tomatoes, peppers, Brussel sprouts, zucchini, eggplant, kale, celery, among other things.
Weather permitting, close to hardening off. Some plants are a bit yellow - maybe over watering?

The yellow can come from a couple of things. too much watering, and also low nitrogen. It looks like all the plants have potting soil, so Nitrogen is probably fine. I'm going to guess what you did - too much watering.

I've started hardening the indoor guys to the sun (an hour a day), and soon outdoors to the cool temperatures. I don't have much variety...tomatoes (Heirloom, Sweet Million, Juliette, and Beefsteak) and some flowers (Petunias, Marigold and Dahlias) Potatoes, Squash and Cukes will be planted soon.

Yours look great!
Mine, yellowing, are eggplant, zucchini, and celery. The others didn't visibly suffer. That said, the eggplant and zucchini are flowering and I believe they will be fine. Too much stress!
I can't wait to spend time outdoors.

Yeah, I'm itching to get this winter finally done with and get the outdoor yard and garden going.

I wonder if the yellowing is normal for those plants? I tend to get yellowing with squash and cukes.

Soil temperature in raised bed and containers - 10C
2 experiments:
1) leaving my tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, eggplant, in the basement grow, with the light set to flowering.
2) harding off my heavy frost tolerant plants, kale, brussels sprouts, in preparation for early planting on the north side of my house.

There isn't much light on the north side - early morning, late afternoon, and evening light.

For the north side of the house I've a number of matching grey rectangular grey containers that I paid 6 dollars each.
There is only 9.5 feet between my 2 story house and the neighbors 2 story. Light will be at a premium.

Nice! That time of the year is really close now. I've been hardening off lately. I dug up the area where my potatoes go this weekend, the soil was surprisingly warm.

I just started my first indoor vegetable garden ever :)

Here's a shot of my tomatoes just after bringing them in from hardening them off for an hour today. I'm amazed at how much they've grown in just one week.

Right on UW. What have got planted?

Starting squash, green onion, peas, beans, and cucumber currently. Next week I will be planting carrots and spinach just straight into the garden. I feel like starting those indoors wouldn't be very effective.

Agreed. Root veggies are best starting outdoor....at least that's my experience. A still have to plant my Squash and cuke seeds...I guess I better get on that!
