Urban farming in Calgary

I'm impressed with the glasses supporting the shelf below the window. I love practically.

haha thanks dude :D Yeah I spent days looking everywhere for an appropriately sized shelf, then I saw that piece of scrap wood laying around the house and had a eureka moment :p

@Blader Flowers on the tomatoes already. Nice! I just planted my seeds for my cukes and squash today...so they'll be a while before getting any flowers.

My tomatoes are looking solid so far. Flowers on them should be out in a week or so. I'm loving the fact that spring is here. Time permitting I'm going to plant my seed potatoes this weekend.

My boys spent their first night outside last night! Spending their second outside tonight. Proud to say that all but one of them have erupted from the soil, only had to replant one seed :D

caterpillars/leaf rollers on poplars and aspens

https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/caterpil...ry-trees-primarily-cosmetic-for-now-1.3964083

The above video shows an arborist spraying the leaves with a soap solution.

Last spring I had a major infestation. Sparrows flocked in and had a three day feast. This spring, a smaller number, and again the sparrows decimated the leaf roller population. We do have a substantial sparrow population in my locale fed by neighbors. So, for me, no need for to fight. Sparrows do a superb job.

My tomatoes are only just coming out now. The first ones showed up yesterday.

I've already had to spray my Virginia Creeper as leafhoppers had started up early this year.

Their natural predators are lady bugs and lacewings. I've yet to see a lady bug this year - so sad

I've seen a few ladybugs, but not near as many as usual. My yard is usually a lady factory lol. Normally they keep the leafhoppers at bay, I may have to go buy some.

How are your tomatoes doing, any full sized ones yet?

My first harvest ever of my own home grown veggies! Was only spinach but still pretty cool. Photos are from before harvest and after harvest and replanting respectively.

Not bad for a frat house, huh? ;)

Report this year vs last year same date
All photos 18 July 2018

Tomatoes
o - healthier, but behind last year in flower/fruit production and maturity - by about 1 to 2 weeks
o - 26 plants , 1 manitoba, 3 stupice, 3 sugary hybrid, 7 tumblers the remaining are sweet millions.

Peppers
o - 1st year I've grown and I'm satisfied. A mix of mild/hot jalepinos, bananas and bell.

Zucchini and eggplant
o - 1st year I've grown. The yellow is producing, and the black beauty hasn't yet - the eggplant has started to produce.

Potatoes
o - red norlands, never flowered, yellowing and not mature height - my neighbor has the same issue and we both purchased from Canadian Tire. It's not soil since we handled soil differently. We believe it was the seed potatoes.

Predation
o - I've got a magpie who loves ripening tomatoes. I don't mind sharing when I have abundance. But at the moment I hate that SOB.
o - ant and aphid population down from last year - oddly insects are not a big issue.
