Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

If I'm not mistaken that parcel had a proposal for a 12 floor residential building at one point. A somewhat ho-hum design, but it still would have been better than a couple of strip mall buildings.

Yeah, not the greatest design, similar in scale and quality to The Met. The density will be good. I have huge hopes for that huge abandoned lot across the street where the Safeway used to be.

I note that the application was made by http://abugovkaspar.com

I do not see this conceptual design on their website. They do have future projects under development including this development beside the heritage The President apartment building on 12th Ave. I think this will be pretty cool for the Beltline.

That "Future" development was a proposal that was floating around Calgary in the 2006-2008 boom if I remember correctly. It may be still in the works, but if I were to guess, I would say it is pretty stale.

Any one else remember the two, 50ish storey tall tower proposal for the lot at the NE corner of 10th Ave and 14th street, from back in 2006?

I remember those lol. They were tall, but fugly. They were proposed by some developer out of Edmonton that had never done any high rises before.

I personally hope it is still in the works. I think it is something you would see in a city like Van or Toronto. The architect speaks of it as a current under development project however it may be that they have not updated their website in 10 years!

Renoir Developments were behind these past proposals at 10th & 14th. I recall they sold the property a year ago or more. Not sure who owns it now. Renoir still own the President property though..

I like this one too. I would prefer it be around 15 storeys instead of 30, but still not a bad design.

I think it's funny when people talk about destroying brutalist buildings from the 60's. It's the same arguments planners made in the 60's when talking about pre-WWI buildings. People say the CBE building downtown is ugly, outdated and doesn't serve a purpose and the land should be used for a tower. I say it just needs more time in the cellar barrel to age ;)

Once it's gone...it's gone.

I love the CBE! It's a great example of Brutalism, and it should definitely be saved, or even modernized. I believe Surreal did a sketchup design of a remodelled CBE a few years ago on SSP, am I right @Surrealplaces ?

There was a design to turn the building into a museum MOCA, before they decided on the Planetarium. I liked the design quite a bit. I'll see if I can find the renders.

The CBE seems like a much better choice than the Planetarium. It looks more iconic. It's better integrated into the urban landscape. It's situated within this emerging "cultural cluster" (Glenbow, Cultural Commons, NMC, Central Library, etc.). Just imagine getting rid of that driveway on Macleod and replacing it with a public square featuring some giant Maman-type sculpture.

The CBE building had better potential for a place like MOCA. Not sure what happened, but IIRC the property changed hands or something.....

Here's some clips of what it would have looked like. Not really shown in the renderings, but part of the proposed design was a residential tower (25 floors iirc) that sat in the atrium.
