Roads, Highways & Infrastructure

Welcome Joeurban, and thanks for the links to those old maps. Love those maps from 1914 and 1926, makes me wish Calgary could have kept that grid layout.

Interested in the historical network of Calgary and Alberta roads?

The U of A's Peel Prairie Provinces collection has hundreds of high res scans of topographical and road maps from the 19teens through the 1950s. I've just been using them to identify stage coach trails and the first 'highways' both of which pre-date even the 2A.

Go here:https://library.ucalgary.ca/c.php?g=255407&p=2961891 and click on Sectionals.kmz

Or just download this:http://libdata.ucalgary.ca/get.php?f...Sectionals.kmz

It will load overlay tiles over most of AB, SK, MB, and some of BC
Each one has links to high res scans of road/topographical maps from the 19teens, 20s, and sometimes the 40s and 50s

The province announced that they are funding the proposed interchange for Hwy22 and Hwy1A just west of Cochrane. For anyone who uses that intersection, this is welcome news.

Good news indeed, and to be picky this project is not west of Cochrane, it's pretty much right in the middle of town and is desperately needed. I also have to get a chuckle out of the NDP government committing to a lot of projects that won't start until after the next election, which in all likelihood will leave the next government in a bit of a bind for spending.

Yep, the section through town is 100% where it's needed most. Once you're leaving town west on 1A it's not very busy. I haven't kept track of all the money the NDP has been promising out, but I'm glad someone has promised money for this. It's been needed for a while now.

The City has funded two interchanges on Stoney Trail. According to Councillor Joe Magliocca, funding has been approved for the construction of the 14st NW interchange as well as the twinning of Shagganappi over Stoney. Wonder if the province has chipped in part of the funding for these two projects?

A lot of the time the city funding is provincial funding, just from a fund where the province doesn’t have an explicit veto over each project, like MSI or gas tax.

A few pic from The History of a Road https://calgaryringroad.wordpress.com/

From Jesse Salus 'Concrete road tunnel that will eventually be under the mainline SW ring road lanes, just north of the elbow river. This tunnel will accommodate the private ‘Weaselhead Road’, serving a route that predates the reserve that was once the original Priddis Trail '

'(Freestanding) tunnel as seen from the west end. Will accommodate a 2-lane road when in service. '

Does this thing ever bring back memories to the rat hole tunnel we had out here in Airdrie!
