I'm not sure why that corner of downtown is such a magnet for ugly.
In addition to the completely car-centric transportation mindset the city has imposed in the area the past 6 decades. The highest density area that has had the least attention to the public realm and ground-floor spaces in the city. High-speed 5 and 6 lanes one-ways don't help with the ambience.I'm not sure why that corner of downtown is such a magnet for ugly.
They could have left out one or two of the planters in the middle area, and as @Mountain Man mentioned, have some room for a a couple of kiosks or something..I don't know. It looks like a condo or office park forecourt. Very pretty but, what can you do there? This is an urban waterfront. There's needs to be more spaces that allows more active programming than yet another place to sit in quiet contemplation.
