General Construction Updates

Any updates on the Eau Claire park at the foot of the Peace Bridge? was supposed to be done by Dec 1 IIRC, looks to be a long ways off still.

On Wednesday morning going by on my bike by they were delivering benches. the Concrete work seems done. Concerted turf or the woven mats work on the dirt areas and it could be fence free in a week or two.

CPC next week is a big one. Here is the link to the full agenda (I do miss the days of individual links for each item, sigh...)
http://www.calgary.ca/PDA/pd/Docume...ission/agenda/2017/agenda-cpc-december-14.pdf

Items of interest:
5.01 (page 151/961) - Amendments to the LUB, Eau Claire ARP and Centre City Plan. I know, amendments to bylaws and policy documents may not seem that interesting, but this represents a pretty major shift in planning policy in Calgary. These changes are to accommodate the removal of the long-standing cash-in-lieu policy that applied to downtown, forcing developers to only construct 50% of their required parking, and pay the rest to the City, to be used to construct parkades on the fringe of downtown. Now, you can build 100% of your required parking if you want to, but if you build less, you still pay into a fund, which is then used to fund alternative modes of transportation infrastructure.

5.10 (page 295/961) - Co-op Dalhousie. DP drawings start on page 317.

5.12 (page 437/961) - Lacaille on 1st Land Use redesignation in Eau Claire.

5.13 (page 459/961) - Grosvner 4th Street Land Use redesignation.

5.16 (page 507/961) - DP for some townhomes in Greenwich, across from COP. DP drawings start on page 520.

5.17 (page 593) and 5.18 (page 628) and 5.19 (page 661) - All related to Truman's West District (policy amendment, Land Use and Outline Plan).

5.22 (page 769/961) - Hines 500 Block DP. DP drawings start on page 786, renderings on 831.

500 Block looks amazing! :)

I like that overpass a lot. Looks very sleek.
Only thing I didn't like was the price tag.
We should really think of these kinds of things as car infrastructure. Pedestrian infrastructure is cheap. Re-time the lights so the wait isn't a lifetime to cross, open a new cross-walk, provide better lighting etc. Pedestrian infrastructure is only expensive when the main goal has nothing to do with pedestrians at all, its to facilitate high volumes of car movements (as is the case here).

Here are a few more pics of the 61st ave overpass.

The big issue at Chinook is cars exiting off Macleod come to a T intersection a short distance later. Many pedestrians crossing at the same intersection compromises safety and backups up cars into the Macleod intersection. The plus 15 resolves some of the pedestrian conflict in addition to providing a safer passage over Macleod. Ideally the access to Chinook, particularly the left turn from Macleod northbound would be via tunnel as per expansion plan.

It would be nice to see the area east of Chinook re-developed with mixed use buildings, and have the +15 walkway go another block further, or even all the way to the LRT station for that matter.
