I remember getting that book out of the library in the late 90s (ye olde Skyscraperpage days), and even then it felt like a blast from the past. But what a find that was! Back then you typically had to rifle through physical copies of old 70s/80s magazines (Alberta Report I think?) and occasionally you'd find stories on these developments. So that book was the holy grail.

That grandstand design was hideous!
I liked it, but you know they would have "modernized" it at some point to basically what we have now.

I swear I've seen that Grandstand design on this site before, and hearing that the canopy was cable suspended concrete.

Similar to the domes roof. That was precast though.

The document also had a chart of 2014 downtown office availability for some reason. (Including some towers that were never built)
Interesting to note "Site Acquired by Oxford," which would later become the Oxford Tower proposal.
EDIT: Also, according to the chart, it seems Brookfield West was originally supposed to be 64 storeys. Since the west tower was never built (The East tower is the one currently standing), 64 storeys would have made it around 282 Meters tall!

Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing! I often find it disappointing to see some of the development we missed out on, but in this case we dodged a couple bullets with the original library design (which may have been a placeholder) and the Arris block. What ended up getting built on those two sites is much better IMO.
It would be nice to see more of those East Village blocks start to fill up though.

East Village looks nothing like the original master plan! We dodged a huge bullet with the library and came out with something much better for sure. I still wish they built those glass domes that flank the DIC. Evolution is still one of my favorite condo projects in the city. I kind of like the original Arris design better, if only the towers above went as tall as the current ones do.
