Under appreciated planning element of any arena or stadium has to be the event level layout. To work thru that jigsaw of beams, with what id argue is the most operationally important and “wall/seperation” heavy area of the building…such professional work. Typically, commercial/residential buildings stick a parkade and mechanical down there.

It was fun to stand there and watch the work happen. It really is very detailed. It isn't well shown here but the rain water reservoir in the NW corner is going to massive. I took these standing on top of a median in the middle of 12th Ave. The construction flag person had a laugh at me climbing up there in my dress clothes and standing there for a few minutes.

I've actually also really enjoyed watching what Utah is doing at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. If you haven't been following that, go check it out the videos the team has been putting out have been very cool. I'm hoping as this progresses we get a version of The Chase series on the Arena construction itself with a video put out every 2-3 months depending on the progress (minor progress over 3 months for the structure, major progress over 2 months on the finer details).

Just checked out some of the Utah videos, I didn't realize how extensive it was. Also points to having a passionate owner.. one day...

This is maybe more meant for the Flames thread but in recent years, really since Ken King's passing, I can't really say we've seen much from the owner's side of things at CSEC. I don't need Jerry Jones but at this point Murray Edwards is as good as a hedge fund owning the team.
I'd only push back in that public perception of most business owners is rarely reality. Could they be more public facing...i guess? But the owners in edm, tampa, pitt, dallas, col are also never in the public space, and theyve had success, so. Lots of teams change owners across sports leagues and it does nothing at all, so i think fans should be careful what they wish for. Be willing to spend to the cap, hire well, and spend money on arena/experience. If owners do that, most other criticism is misplaced

Wasn't there stories about the Flames not willing to retain salary when trading players? I think they're fine owners, but doesn't seem as deeply passionate about the market as some other ones. But not every city has a young billionaire that is deeply rooted in the city like Utah.

Aren't the Flames retaining part of Markstrom's salary?
They are. I don't like the owners of the Flames but they do spend to the cap when the team is competitive and always green light big game hunting for free agency (although risky), could've easily had a Winnipeg, Ottawa or Columbus situation with internal caps.

This is exactly what i'm talking about. Critique owners for keeping gm's too long, saying dumb shit in public, or never spending a dime in the community. Criticizing them for "not paying someone to not work for you" or that you dont care enough about the city (haven't they invested billions collectively in health care/arena?)....just WWIIIIIlDLY irrational.

Salary retention is part of the CBA and an asset a team has. Not being willing to utilize that is similar to not spending to the salary cap. The players in question aren't Jonathan Huberdeau either, so the retention wasn't that much. And I said they're fine owners, not too different from corporate owners, but they don't seem to want to invest in the city or the team, like threatening to move the team over the arena deal.

Are you familiar with professional sport fandom? This isn't really that though.

No one here is saying anything other than, that Utah owner is really present and a positive face for the franchise out in the community. Nothing wrong with saying you want your owner to be just as outwardly a fan of the team as you. If you don't feel that way, that's fine. The Flames, their foundation and all the work the players do through their own charity work are not being questioned.

It was well documented that ownership didn't want to retain on salaries. And although we seem to have ended up with a decent arena, the amount of money the very well-off ownership, who will benefit greatly from the new arena, put towards the project is pretty laughable. That's show biz though, most markets have owners like that it would just be nice sometimes if we weren't another one of them.
