It's as meaningful of a gesture as the land acknowledgement at the start of games. Nobody really cares, but it makes people feel like we respect indigenous culture and didn't completely fuck them over lol.

That being said, for the indigenous people that do go to games, it's likely quite meaningful, therefore worthwhile.
 
Any chance they recreate some of the Saddledome exhibits that are spaced around the current concourse like a display on the Olympics, Flames/Hitmen history boards, etc? Would be nice to have murals, banners, trophies, and cool artifacts on display all over.
 
There's confirmation that there will be something honoring the Saddledome in some way in the concourse, and I would imagine they have some sort of display featuring a small Hitman and Flames hall of fame somewhere in the concourse. It's a shame the hall of fame planned in the 2021 version never made it into Scotia Place.

But my point is, did we really need a lame/bland/boring/generic/static indigenous welcome message at the main entry point of a "state of the art" entertainment venue....when we already MANY elements incorporated into the design?

Do we really need the LED band that wraps 1/3 of the building? Do we really need any of the art that's going to go on and around the building? How does one define need in this context?

This is stuff the city and CSEC feel adds to the building and is part of the whole reconciliation thing that's happening now. If you personally don't like it, then don't look at it. Others will like it and appreciate it.
 
We also do not know what the conversations contained when they spoke with indigenous people. That's where the land acknowledgement comes from, conversations with indigenous people about what we can do to work towards reconciliation. That came out of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission work that was done by the federal government with indigenous people.

Some stuff is not for you, some stuff is. In my opinion the best thing about Scotia Fireplace is how it treats things on a human scale. It isn't a large imposing structure that fills a whole block right up to the sidewalk. They've done a great job with interesting landscaping and creative ways of incorporating things that most of time you will just walk right by but maybe one day for a moment you will stop and think about.
 
I worry about CSEC being lazy with the upkeep of the landscape around the building. Just imagining the countless lodgepole pines on the north and southwest sides all turning brown and dying is making me cringe so hard with how bad it'll look.

Short answer is no.

Long answer is at one point on the block just across 12th Ave there was a proposal called the Orchards by LAMB. They've since exited Calgary. Railtown, which was proposed for the land between 10th Ave and the track is still tied up in litigation between CPKC, the Province and the proposal's developer Remington. I think that one actually had some recent developments after an appeal.

There is the Green Line that will run between whatever happens with Railtown and the CPKC tracks. The Green Line station should be around 4th Street SE but we won't know whether it is a surface or above ground station until the downtown portion of the Green Line is determined. There is also the back of a napkin proposal for the Grand Central station the province wants to build for highspeed, regional and airport rail around there as well.
