Reading the article at straight face value - the arena is less of CMLC priority because CSEC got them removed from the project so it's not even in their work to be involved anymore. It would be weird if they had a press release and said it was their priority on their workplan.

It's a bit of a pointless article, but CMLC might as well state the obvious - as far as a now-external-to-the-deal stakeholder is concerned, we already have an arena. Sure a new arena would be great, but why should CMLC care beyond some general planning and coordination functions largely complete in the area planning exercise? The only groups left in a hypothetical deal are citizens and taxpayers (via their elected representatives) and the wealthy team ownership group (via CSEC).

Everyone including CMLC should care about a new arena as apparently the current one is falling apart. ... literally. However, the main reason they should care is that a new arena is also the center piece for development of all of the empty lots along 11 and 12 Ave. Until the arena gets going, everything else (residential, hospitality, entertainment, other commercial) probably remains in limbo.

The Convention Centre expansion will have a much greater impact on the surrounding area than a new arena. Mostly due to the fact that there is already an arena on site with a similar capacity. We might get a few more concerts, etc.

Don't forget about everything else that could be built after the arena. Green Line, Hotel, Stampede retail, and other developments. That place is going to be under construction for 20 years. Hence the 17th Ave site access.
