In general I'm ok with this but the last few meters of the east facade of the new build partially blocking the balcony looks pretty crappy.
In a historical context the balcony was built to get views of the new city's downtown 100 yrs ago.
 
Because of the way this is on the hill on 14 Street, from many angles from the north it looks much taller than it actually is. The project on 26 Avenue & 18 Street has a similar thing going on. Really good density integrated into a hilly area results in some cool angles and lots of urban depth visually.
 
I wonder if it would have looked better if the new brick matched the old brick on the building...
Maybe, but its a bit of a faux pas with heritage, unless you're doing intensive restoration work its better to make the "new visually distinctive from the old."

Of course there are ways to make a close match on the material and provide distinction with massing/form/texture/light etc - however it can be hard to pull off well on something like this.
