It's only 1 level underground, pretty quick to shore up and excavate.

It's just for construction purposes that it's so close to the building next door? I assume there'd be at least a walkway between this and the building to the south?

Looking at the external wall in the hole, it looks like there will be at least 1-2 meters between the two buildings at ground level. There is just a bit of extra margin in the hole rather than digging right at the edge of their building envelope.
