Dreeshen is a piece of work - how does someone like him get to the position he is in ??
Put more simply, arrogance. A government that’s been around too long and has entrenched the party to a higher status than the electorate gets into these kind of issues about corruption, nepotism and surprisingly sloppy behaviour scandals. The Dreeshan types thrive, because they need to demonstrate loyalty to the party, rather than political skills to attract the electorate.

It’s arrogance because the party politicians don’t care if they get caught or look bad, they are accountable to the party not really to the electorate. This is only possible when the electorate is too forgiving of scandals if it’s “their team” doing them.

Even if a candidate loses an election, the party throws them a cozy position in another way like a “blue ribbon” panel or some think-tank so they can still be in the stable for next time they need a guy. The party protects the person so it reinforces the loyalty and makes these guys prioritize it over other things.

UCP is in this scandal-prone arrogance mode now - PCs before in AB, other provinces have their own story arcs with the same trends reoccurring when a party gets arrogant. It’s not really a left/right party issue - it’s a party/ electorate relationship issue when a party sticks around too long, becomes too entrenched they don’t have to work for their supper.

Recently - and very ironically - the AB conservative crew spoke lots to the arrogance likely to come if the federal Liberals got a 4th term - obviously being silent that AB conservatives and their provincial UCP colleagues have mostly been elected for like ten terms in a row.

Arrogant parties usually bring their own end eventually. Too many scandals, too many weak politicians chasing loyalty and getting out of touch with voters. We saw that with the AB PCs in the 2010s, for example.

But it’s up to the voters to decide when the nonsense ends, because parties can’t quit the loyalty/corruption train once they get on it.

Beautiful morning for bike to work day. Probably around 300 people at the pancake breakfast, and the bike paths were very busy with commuters today. Love to see it!
