Unfortunately, the " Big Owe" situation is a choice between terrible options. Either spend $870 million on a new roof for a building that needs major renovations on top of that in order to be of much use for anything, or spend up to $2 billion to demolish the thing (although a lot of people...

They applied for and received a BP earlier this year...not sure why they haven't started construction yet.

That does look a lot better. I o like a bit fo colour on a project rather than the usual white/black/grey, and I don't mind the yellow and orange but can see how it could be a bit polarizing.

Thanks for doing all the legwork in finding these projects Calgarytiger, and great news about those conversions. The west end of downtown is going to be insanely dense once they are all done, which is an amazing transformation considering how dead the area was a few years back. I hope there will...

When I first moved to Calgary at the end of the 90s, Calgary wasn't anywhere near the immigration hub it is now. The city's growth was mostly due to interprovincial migration or natural increase, and was still growing by 20-30k a year. Perhaps that's the roughly the level we'll see going...

Calgary and Edmonton are a bit unique among the 6 biggest metros in that much of our growth is through interprovincial migration. I believe the other 4 have net outmigration that would result in absolute decline without immigration?

I was worried that developers here would slam on the breaks as they have in Toronto and Vancouver, but fortunately that doesnt seem to be happening. I guess it took a few years of overbuilding to get them where they are at today. Developers still seem bullish on Calgary, at least relative to...

Same. I love the iconic shape of the building, and how it nicely compliments the skyline from certain angles, but it's an abysmal building to experience at street level, and the hot dog colour scheme of the elevators and stairwells have really not aged well.

DP has been submitted by Manu Chugh Architect for a new building on 17th SW, where the Dennys is currently. Developer is Strategic. Overall I quite like it but my one big gripe is they should have done a 2 storey podium IMO.

Anyone know how many levels of parkade this project has? I assume only one or two, as hotels typically don't need a whole lot of parking. That could mean a relatively quick construction timeline.

I'm just so glad they didn't pick the one with the cowboys on horses and the pumpjacks.

Great news! Not one of my favorite projects by any means, but will be nice to see this giant vacant lot filled in.

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

It seems to me that the whole thing is more of an exercise in optics than anything else. And in that sense, I suppose at least the current PM is putting forward a narrative of wanting to remove obstacles and get things done, which is in contrast with his predecessor.

    61st Ave Residential | 64m | 19s | Cadillac Fairview | Zeidler

I do wish the buildings were designed to be taller and slimmer, but I am excited to see what will be the tallest buildings in the Chinook area hopefully getting us a little closer to having a proper midtown.

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

Kingston, Ontario has 6 penitentiaries. If penitentiaries cause a huge spike in crime, shouldn't Kingston have a sky high crime rate?

The steel is flying! I was at an event a few weeks ago where it was revealed that the building envelope will be complete in a year - ie the building will be fully enclosed and exterior largely complete!
