Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

Dreeshen is a piece of work - how does someone like him get to the position he is in ??
Put more simply, arrogance. A government that’s been around too long and has entrenched the party to a higher status than the electorate gets into these kind of issues about corruption, nepotism and surprisingly sloppy behaviour scandals. The Dreeshan types thrive, because they need to demonstrate loyalty to the party, rather than political skills to attract the electorate.

It’s arrogance because the party politicians don’t care if they get caught or look bad, they are accountable to the party not really to the electorate. This is only possible when the electorate is too forgiving of scandals if it’s “their team” doing them.

Even if a candidate loses an election, the party throws them a cozy position in another way like a “blue ribbon” panel or some think-tank so they can still be in the stable for next time they need a guy. The party protects the person so it reinforces the loyalty and makes these guys prioritize it over other things.

UCP is in this scandal-prone arrogance mode now - PCs before in AB, other provinces have their own story arcs with the same trends reoccurring when a party gets arrogant. It’s not really a left/right party issue - it’s a party/ electorate relationship issue when a party sticks around too long, becomes too entrenched they don’t have to work for their supper.

Recently - and very ironically - the AB conservative crew spoke lots to the arrogance likely to come if the federal Liberals got a 4th term - obviously being silent that AB conservatives and their provincial UCP colleagues have mostly been elected for like ten terms in a row.

Arrogant parties usually bring their own end eventually. Too many scandals, too many weak politicians chasing loyalty and getting out of touch with voters. We saw that with the AB PCs in the 2010s, for example.

But it’s up to the voters to decide when the nonsense ends, because parties can’t quit the loyalty/corruption train once they get on it.

Beautiful morning for bike to work day. Probably around 300 people at the pancake breakfast, and the bike paths were very busy with commuters today. Love to see it!

I received a notice from the City that they are going to replace the sidewalk on the south side of 34 Ave with a multi-use pathway between 17 St and 14 St, connecting the Main Streets work. Pretty sure this forum identified the gap before.

Nice to see them finish that last three block stretch. The sooner they do it the better, everywhere else in Marda is under construction, might as well do it all at the same time.

This isn't the only multi-use pathway in the area to be connected. They're connecting the one on 50th Ave. You will be able to go from MRU to Sandy Beach on a multi-use path.

Drives me absolutely nuts that the answer to the four-way stop at 50th Ave and 20 St being congested is a traffic light. Should be a traffic circle.

I knew about the traffic light, but not the multi-use path. I agree the light isn’t ideal, but it has to be better than the current conditions. Would love to see cycling improvements on 20th St from 26 Ave to 50 Ave now. The lanes are there, but the infrastructure could be better.

When accompanied by raised crosswalks, to slow vehicles entering the intersection, giving vehicles in other directions opportunity to enter the intersection, a traffic circle would've been ideal.

I use to not like forcing interactions between pedestrians and cyclists at intersections but I've come around to the idea of naturally slowing down a cyclist at a point of interaction to force them to be more aware and think through what they need to do.

It would be nice if we applied this logic to vehicles and forced drivers to be more aware and think through what they need to do. Adding some, even minor infrastructure along 20th St would do this. Doesn't even have to be continuous but adding the cones to intersection would have the desire affect. Naturally slowing down any form of transport and forcing the operator to think could improve a lot. Simple isn't always better.
