Calgary Flames Official Thread

I did have the same thought about the Flames being too hot right now lol.

Yeah pretty scary stuff, with the strong winds they can't fight these fires from the air. Last numbers I saw were 50 000 evacuated and over 1000 structures burned already.
Also a looming insurance nightmare. Some of the wealthiest areas with incredibly expensive homes. Cost sharing of insurance means everyone in California will be paying for these mansions for decades.

Fire coverage in western North America is going to be a massive issue moving forward.
We should probably start seriously talking about where we're building and what type of natural disaster mitigation is happening to try to at least slow things like this from happening.

Billions have been spent on flood mitigation, and Calgary doesn't have a big urban forest but there are areas that are pretty vulnerable.

i heard from news that the coverage for fire got cancelled last week from insurance.
Maybe some but insurers had been pulling out and there's a public backstop insurer that is now stuck with huge sums to payout and will likely require a tax-payer funded bailout

Based on where the California fires were, it's right at the border of forested areas and residential, partly why it's an extremely wealthy area. Fire risk would seem lower here as we're surrounded mostly by farmland with some exceptions in the SW, but probably not large enough to cause the level of devastation that's happening in LA. We should definitely be hail proofing our infrastructure, especially critical ones like the airport.

There is definitely a risk for fires starting in a wooded area and being blown into a residential area, but it would be nothing like what's happening in LA since our wooded areas are quite small and sparse. Hail, flooding and tornadoes are our disaster risk.

So after the Flames lost to Utah and Nashville I felt comfortable thinking the tank was finally underway and then they win in Anaheim a traditional graveyard for the Flames.
So frustrating 😐

Just when you think it will fall apart they pull it back together. Since even at the deadline we don't see much change I think they are who they are. They'll be around the playoffs and could be in or out. Not ideal for the long term either way.

Sure, the young guys playing meaningful games is good but outside of Wolf and maybe Zary this team does not include the players who are likely going to be part of the next wave. So even installing that "playing meaningful games" feeling is kind of a waste.

I worry the flames are going to end up holding on to any potential trade pieces past their peak value (Anderson, Kadri, etc.) and miss an opportunity to make your organization better in the long run. I want to trust Conroy's NHL asset management up to this point will be an indication of his future NHL asset management but I'm hesitant.

I could see the Flames finishing 8th if they can figure out a way to score more goals, win on the road, and win a few more in regulation. The bottom half of the Western Conference is not good this year, the West has been dominated by the East, and there is such a drop-off from Colorado in the 7 seed. The Flames will probably be competing against the Canucks (who are currently falling apart) and Blues for a playoff spot.
