    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

The short is - property rights, a firm reliance on a private market, and the fact that any taxation powers are within the province's power. The City can not force someone to develop because it is not the City's property. Tools to incentivize such action (like a land value tax) are tools only...

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

Given just how busy the N side gets, the S side is my preferred commuting route to/from work once the glacier called June (for when it melts) is passable.

    Calgary craft beer scene

Calgary (and Alberta's) late entry to craft beer created a pretty tight industry. There is a semi official map at https://yycbeer.ca/calgary_beer_map/ My personal favourites are Annex, Establishment, Cabin, and Dandy. With 3 being in the Barley Belt (RIP that name), and one being just north of...

    Sunalta Heights | 88.39m | 27s | Housing One | S2 Architecture

FWIW, the second tower's excavation is part of their phase 2 as their current site office (the old motorsports shop immediately west of the current construction) would be torn down for this second phase.

FWIW, it is something the community has been advocated to see get addressed as part of the Pumphouse Park improvements since it was not included in this project. The extension is also officially open per the City as of today.

The 12th Ave cycle track extension in Sunalta will hopefully be done by the end of the month. 12th Ave and 19th Street have been repaved, so still waiting for - paint, flexiposts on curbs, and the pathway for the turn from 19th St to 12th Ave.

    Covid-19

We are nowhere near as fully vaxxed as we think we are, and is also why the CMOH continues to reiterate that we need to get vaccinated. Splitting it into % of eligible, or % of adults is good for seeing progress but can be misleading. As of yesterday we are at 58.1% for all of Alberta (65.6%...

    Sunalta Heights | 88.39m | 27s | Housing One | S2 Architecture

It's got a massive amount of parking. 4 floors underground, and then 2.5/3 above grade.

If anything I'm still blown away by just how much parking is in this development despite being so close to an LRT station. There are 4 levels under ground, and roughly 2 above ground. For 353 units across two towers, there are 330 residential stalls (302 was the minimum required without...

The 12th Ave Cycle Track extension and engagement sessions are listed online now at https://calgary.ca/12ave 3 consistent lanes for general traffic and extending into Sunalta. It'll be done in three phases: Phase 1 (2019) - Improve the roadway and track between 4th and 11th St. Phase 2 (2019)...

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

I'm curious if it's changed from what was first proposed in November - paving the service road beside the LRT between 42nd Ave and 58th Ave (which already had some funds set aside but needed council direction to talk to CPR) along with a multi-use pathway along 42nd. I'm really hoping it can...

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

Delayed until sometime in November, maybe later. I can't think of anyone who is remotely impressed with this riverbank/stormwater work. Good news is that the north pathway between 14th and Crowchild opened up on schedule, the Crowchild crossing is open again, and thankfully the warm weather...

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

First for LimeBike at least (if they're chosen). U-Bicycle rolled out into Victoria last year and has started expanding in the Vancouver area. Dropbike has been in Kelowna for a few months now as well as several university campuses around the country since last year.

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

Dockless Bike Share may be coming to Calgary in September 2018 - there's a notice of motion on Monday's council meeting to have the policy in place for sometime in Sept. 2018 for how a dockless bike share would be regulated by the City. (Item 12.1.1) EDIT: Evan Woolley has posted more about it...

    General Construction Updates

Went to the Sunalta ARP Open House tonight for two developments: Housing One (https://calgary.ca/PDA/pd/Pages/Current-studies-and-ongoing-activities/Housing-One-application.aspx) on 10th Ave near 14th St. SW and the Arlington 17 project...
