General Construction Updates

To be fair, they did return the “lollipop” signs at 33 Ave & 19 St and 34 Ave & 20 St:

And the design does call for “Marda Loop Gateway Features” in the east end 33 Ave & 14 St, 34 Ave & 14 St (future phase), as well as at a couple other locations throughout the Main Streets. Who knows what those “features” will look like.

That said, I also don’t really like the new sign. It’s a bit cartoony for my taste, but maybe it’ll grow on me. I think they could have done something more subtle.
Another lollipop sign has been installed at 34 Ave & 18 St SW.

There also appears to be a community “bulletin board” (it looks to be metallic/megnetic) at the same intersection.

Was at Marda Loop this weekend, the construction actually wasn't that bad and only once we had to switch to the other side of the sidewalk because of construction. The wider sidewalks makes a pretty big difference too. It wasn't very busy, I think the perception of terrible construction has led people to avoid the area, even though it is not that bad anymore. How much of this work was infrastructure maintenance? I find it hard to believe sidewalk expansion and repaving some roads took this long.

No pic, but a nice wide sidewalk is going in at 4 St SW between 50 and 56 Ave SW (where it meets Macleod). Since 2020 or so there's been a temporary barrier with a sidewalk on the asphalt, and people seemed to be using it both as a sidewalk and a bike lane. Hopefully an actual bike lane is built nearby (5 St SW?) soon.

Construction activity has definitely normalized. Road/lane closures are now limited to a few areas that are lower traffic.

I’ve actually noticed a marked increase in people in the neighbourhood, which I think is because construction congestion isn’t that bad right now. People are actually using the free parking lot at 33 Ave & 21 St.

Utility upgrades/relocates were definitely a major reason for why construction took so long.

The wider sidewalks definitely make a big difference in the pedestrian feel in the neighbourhood. An underrated aspect is the improvements to the interaction between the sidewalk and entrances to private residences and businesses. New walkways, stairs, ramps, retaining walls, fences/gates, hand rails, etc.

I did utilize the free parking lot, but it wasn't on Google Maps, so I think a lot of people don't know about it. I'm pretty sure for the sidewalk expansion, the city took back some of it's ROW and brought the properties on 33/34 to the property line. Similar work is being done on 19th next month. I'm wondering in these cases, is the city paying for relocating fences, building new gates, etc.? Or the city tells you they're taking it back and it's up to the property owner to relocate?

I think the City is paying for it, because the materials are consistent so it must be the City’s contractor.
