We're actually getting a water feature? How many times has this forum pined for incorporation of a fountain? It also looks like there are different species of birds incorporated into the fountain. It kind of reminds me of the fountain in Berczy Park in Toronto with all the cast-iron dogs (and one cat) looking up at the bone at the top. I think the Olympic Park one should have one cat looking up at all the birds.

I think those birds are not part of the fountain.

Edit: I'm wrong, there are birds that are spouting water.

They nailed it in my opinion. Now they just need to execute, and not water it down through value engineering.
I, too, really like the design and hope it is executed as designed!

Many cities have a “crown jewel” (eg: NYC: Central Park, Vancouver: Stanley Park, etc). Which do you think has the potential to become Calgary’s “crown jewel”: Olympic Plaza or Eau Claire/Prince’s Island Park?

I want to read the entire release and examine everything more closely when I have time, but on quick glance I’m impressed! I’m absolutely stunned they are doing a water feature and keeping the ice rink. I was certain they would ax all that in the name of money. Would have liked them to keep a couple of the original Olympic pillars somewhere, or make a wall with all the names who were on the bricks. Overall colour me impressed at first look!

The nighttime fountain shot is funny - dozens of fully clothed kids running through the water feature at what would have to be 10 PM.

I like the plaza design - seems they have put a lot of thought into the design, function, details etc.

That new performing arts building however seems to get worse every time I see see it. If that exterior is natural wood left to weather to a depressing grey color it’s going to be brutal IMO.

I am pleasantly surprised by the new Olympic Plaza design. I had heard through the grapevine that it would be mediocre, but this looks like a good use of the space. I am especially impressed at how they put thought into how it would be used year round.

I'd argue that Prince's Island Park and the accompanying riverfront pathway are already becoming our "Crown jewel". Not as well known as the other examples you highlighted but it's always busy on a nice day and I see it serving that purpose, even moreso with Olympic Plaza being closed for 3 years. If we could get a little more development happening in Eau Claire it would further enhance the vibrancy of the riverfront.
