I think we should terraform it into a giant nose.
Me too.Put me on team "fill nose hill with as many trees as possible". We've got enough bald prairie around these parts
Agree 100% They're good in some areas where you have a lot of space and want to generate some tree cover, but generally they aren't very good in most areas. The bulk of the foliage is at the bottom, whereas with deciduous trees the bulk is at the top, allowing visibility and better shade.
A place where they do work is something like along the Deerfoot. There's a small forest that's been growing for about 15 years and been filling in decently with both deciduous and coniferous trees. Once the conifers are in they seem to give enough shade and windblock to allow other trees to sprout up.

Thanks! I recall that it was tied to a company, but for some reason thought it was Shaw lol. I think the partnership idea is great. Too bad some of the oil companies didn't do this back when they had money to burn. This "forest" was created by McInnis and Holloway as a memorial forest. They have been creating different memorial forests in and around Calgary since 1996. You can read more about this program here: Memorial Forests Program
More partnerships like this could be pretty cool.
I think part of the forest between Glenmore and the calf robe bridge on the river side was planted by BP oil. Thanks! This is chef's kiss...
“The inspiration for the plaza’s design is born of the iconography of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games – the ‘sunflake’ – which is represented thematically in the radiating stone pavers of the plaza, and more literally in the design of the central water feature, a 12-metre tall structure the colour of an Olympic gold medal that serves as a fountain in summer, a centrepiece for the skating rink in winter, and a landmark through all seasons.
This is also good... I especially like the reorientation of the plaza to look south (with the slope on the north edge).
The pavilion on the plaza’s east edge creates an indoor gathering place activated with a food and beverage service and public washrooms, and the green space on the plaza’s north edge offers a sloped green space. Together, the reimagined plaza reflects both the historical significance of the location and Calgary’s aspirations for a modern, inclusive public space.”
All this for 70M, bargain!

Like the design overall, but does the 10 pointed star mean anything? A missed opportunity to have it shaped like a Maple Leaf
They mention it in the tie into the Olympics but I don't get it either. The Olympic tie-in with the sunflake tree(?) blew my mind.Like the design overall, but does the 10 pointed star mean anything? A missed opportunity to have it shaped like a Maple Leaf
