Yikes! Does the crane have to come down now? I really don't know, but I would be hesitant to trust a crane whose base has been on fire like that.....

What caught fire? Never seen a tower crane catch fire at the base before...

It’s not at the base of the crane. That pic just shows the very top of the fire. It was much larger down lower from the crane base.

The wooden hoarding around the crane was on fire, not the actual crane. Looked like they were using the crane when I was out walking today at lunch, so any damage was likely just superficial.

Thanks for clarifying. That picture shows the crane base is blackened by the fire, difficult to see the source. I too was curious what would burn like that on a (presumably) all metal base. Maybe something flammable spilled on it, but the hoarding below is a much more reasonable explanation.

This tower looks really good! Worth the painful excavation! Too bad it wasn’t located in the east village or a little closer to all the new towers on 10th Ave like Mark and Lamb’s tower.
