Development proposals are coming in at a good pace these days. Two days ago we reported on a new high-rise proposal for The Beltline, and today we are reporting on yet another new proposal, this time in Calgary's burgeoning University District. Vancouver based Gracorp Capital recently unveiled plans for a new multifamily residential project on Block 15 of the master planned University District.
The proposal, known as 'The Gramercy' calls for a 6 floor, concrete built residential building along University Avenue, just to the east of August, and across the street to the north of Block 23 and Central Park.
Designed by Calgary based architects, Gibbs Gage, The Gramercy will offer 83 residential units, as well as retail frontage along University Avenue. The building's design is typical of a modern mid rise type look, with a mix of brick, vision glass and spandrel glass. Renderings show retail bays, and a widened sidewalk area that would have the ability to host outdoor patio space.
The Gramercy looks like a project that will fit in well with the overall plan of University District. The massing and urban form are a good match for University Avenue, and The Gramercy's proximity to other retail outlets including the new Save On Foods opening up at the base of Rhapsody (Gracorp's other University district project) make it an ideal location for new residents.
With more yet to come, SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
