Construction is underway on a new affordable housing project in downtown Calgary. The project, dubbed 933 - 5th Ave, will be situated upon a small corner lot, adjacent to the C-Train's Red Line at the west end of downtown. The 9 storey building, when finished, will be home to 74 affordable housing units. Calgary-based HomeSpace is the group responsible for the development. HomeSpace, is no stranger to affordable housing as a group who operates more than 500 affordable units in 22 buildings across the city, but this will be their most ambitious project to date.

Designed by IBI Group, the structure is modern and angular with a small footprint. The facade will will have multiple colours, including orange, blue, white and brown, and the vision glass will be tinted green. The exterior materials will be composite panels, with some spandrel glass.

The project has come about rather quickly. In February 2018, the City of Calgary awarded HomeSpace three parcels of land following a competitive application process for several non-market housing development sites including 933 5th Ave SW. HomeSpace supplied an application to construct a 74-unit, permanent rental apartment building for single adults. Total project cost is expected to be $23.5 million (land at market value) and occupancy is slated for Fall 2020.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
