As we get further into summer, it seems that there have been no end of excellent photos appearing on our Forum, especially when given as naturally talented a model as the New Central Library currently under construction in East Village. Captured in great detail over the last two weeks, the following are but a few of the best shots that have been posted from various vantage points around the building.

Giving an idea of scope, the image above captures construction crews hard at work, the $245 million public institution to be the undoubted crown jewel of East Village upon its completion in late 2018.

Viewed above, the restored historic streetscape along 8 Ave SE, including the refurbished facades of the Hillier Block and St. Louis Hotel, have been given new life, the imposing presence of the New Central Library softened by its comparable height and sympathetic massing.

Viewed from 3 St SE, the elegant prow of the Snøhetta-designed structure sits squarely above an LRT tunnel, through which trains will pass en route to nearby City Hall Station, located less than a block away. While early plans to provide a direct pedestrian connection between the library and City Hall Station were scrapped, and passengers will not be able to disembark despite the tunnel's passage right below the new facility, riders will still be able to reach the New Central Library via a short walk outdoors.

Truly a transformative project for the city, the New Central Library will connect Calgarians of every type to what will soon be a bustling hub for arts, education, and culture.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
