A month since our last update, the latest photos capturing the ongoing demolition of the U of C's MacKimmie Tower reveal more long-hidden architectural details hailing from a bygone era. Part of the massive, MacKimmie Complex and Professional Faculties Building Redevelopment project currently underway courtesy of the University of Calgary and DIALOG, the remodelling process has been a source of interest to local photogs, leading to a series of new shots making their way to our Forum.

Viewed above and in close-up detail below, the latest images reveal the period-specific coffered ceilings of the decades-old tower, the roof to eventually be removed prior to the addition of two more floors once construction begins.

Prior to its top-to-bottom re-cladding in glass, the removal of the precast concrete panels must be completed, the scale of adaptive reuse underway here hopefully a model for future projects elsewhere in the city.

Before long, this nondescript concrete slab will be born anew, reimagined as a modern glass tribute to higher learning, the future home of the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking to support 500 new full-load students. The addition of a plane of photovoltaic panels to the new roof will add a sustainable, green element to the project, the feature to be carried across to the adjacent four-storey block.

Viewed above, the new MacKimmie Complex and Professional Faculties Building will represent a marked improvement over its predecessor, the University of Calgary's latest addition to serve as a symbol of innovation and creativity.

SkyriseCalgary will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
