It's been a few months since glazing arrived on the scene of the Beltline's next residential landmark, The Royal. In the opening months of 2018, the Embassy Bosa-developed project has climbed a number of storeys to reveal its architectural expression, which is largely informed by window wall, spandrel and an irregular balcony placement.
A constant stream of photo updates visually narrate the progress of the building. An externally mounted tower crane on the west elevation is servicing construction, which currently sits approximately at the 25-storey point. The block-long development straddling 8th Street and 9th Street at 16th Avenue SW replaces two bookending surface parking lots, a playground, an apartment complex and two single-family dwellings.
Branded 'Club Royal,' the project will contain over 10,000 square feet of amenities, including an elevated outdoor garden and two levels of interior common spaces. An owners' lounge equipped with a fully stocked kitchen and large televisions, plus a fitness facility that includes workout equipment and a squash court, are expected to greet residents upon the building's completion.
In addition to the 34-storey, 223-unit tower, the development will introduce a significant amount of retail to the neighbourhood. Led by First Capital Realty, a commercial podium will contain double-height floors to accommodate an Urban Fare grocery store and an urban format Canadian Tire.
