The last time we checked in on the progress of the 390-room hotel currently assuming form in the Beltline, the exterior envelope had just begun installation. In the four months since, the new Residence Inn by Marriott Calgary Downtown and SilverBirch Conference Centre has continued to elevate its image in the fast-growing neighbourhood, with full rows of glazing shaping the aesthetic impression of the project.
When complete in early 2019, the corner of 10th Avenue and 5th Street SW will become home to one of the largest Residence Inns in the world. The all-suite hotel is positioning itself as a magnet for extended-stay business and family leisure travellers, with rooms featuring full kitchens and separate living and sleeping areas. On-site amenities will include a 24-hour food and beverage market, numerous health and fitness options, multiple lounging areas, and an expansive roof deck. The under-construction complex will also host a 10,000-square-foot SilverBirch Conference Centre.
About half of the IBI Group-designed project's current concrete skeleton is now sheathed in a navy blue glazing, which is accented by sequential pairs of horizontal white spandrel across the wider elevations. A perpendicular block intersects with this volume, and is artistically differentiated from this section through the use of burnt orange vertical spandrel panels.
While work on the hotel has been stealing the show so far, a second tower is climbing in its emerging shadow. A 33-storey rental building will hold 303 units along with a spacious fitness centre and a range of indoor and outdoor social spaces. To be managed by GWL Realty Advisors, the apartment building will also offer 7,000 square feet of streetscape-animating, ground-level retail space.
