Weather and Gardening Discussion

All those weather streaks came to a hard stop this weekend! lol

No snow at my place, but -0.5 this morning and frost. Plants in the yard seem ok so far, think they will get a little boost this week before dying next weekend lol.

The cars on my street had a tinge of frost this morning. Nothing on the trees or flowers, but it was close. Looks lie the next few days warm up again.

I’m still not used to Calgary’s weather. One day it’s beautiful fall weather and then you wake to your snow lol then it’s gone and back to fall weather for a while. It never gets boring!

Some of this years crop, we grow most of this in a 16' x 3' raised garden bed that I built. This year i built a removable cover to use to extend the growing season and keep the damn squirrels out.

Carrots, beets and potatoes. Root veggies ftw when growing in 'berta

We also grow green beans that we eat as we grow, with lots of success. Also a ton of herbs, in a our small 4-plex "yard"

My two flower baskets are still going. I cheated and brought them in for a couple of days when we had the snow, but they’ve been out ever since.
I have a couple Dusty Miller plants that are still going strong, everything else died 2 weeks ago. I may put some houseplants outside today to fool myself that's it's still the green season lol. Might hit 20 today! the wind may not be so nice though...

My south facing rose bush and mint is still going strong. Apples on the tree aren't growing anymore, but I'm still picking them. I see the weather looks to be solid right up to Halloween where it's forecast at 19C. So often we seem to get a dump of snow right before Halloween, and then cold weather the day of.

I'm relatively new here, I remember hearing Calgary doesn't really have shoulder seasons. But seems like we have 2 months of fall now? Winter tire season is going to move to Remembrance Day instead of Thanksgiving. Even the city is still doing lots of construction. I see a bunch of sidewalk repairs, Memorial is still closed in the downtown portion.

Fall is October, typically November is winter and September is still summer. I rarely change my tires before early-mid Novermber, generally depends on when the ski hills open.

There's been a definite change in the length of Calgary's falls. The biggest thing that I've seen is the absence of those early frosts. In the past Calgary would often have nice weather through t=until mid November , sometimes even longer, but there was a always a heavy frost in early September and often snow in September. It would kill the gardens and other green foliage, and then often we could see 4 to 6 weeks of nice weather after that. But yes your point, it feels like there are longer falls, and it's more of a season.
TBH, I haven't paid attention to springs in recent years. I always plant May long, or the weekend after, even if May has nice weather in the forecast.

Has construction season changed? Was there typically a time when most outside construction will end? Or is it just work until it gets too cold?
