Urban farming in Calgary

That's different. I'd be far more interested if they were exploring something robust like commercial scale green housing or something more avant-garde like vertical farming. I suppose that'd be missing the point though since it's intended as a charitable endeavor to feed the homeless.

Still a few years away for green houses, vertical farming - need better robotics to make it more competitive with out high labour costs. The aurora canabis installation up near Edmonton is leading this - apparently no humans will touch the plant until harvest, with robots moving its tray around the greenhouse.

A couple of people mentioned doing urban farming in underground parkades should they become empty. It wouldn't have the benefit of the sun, but it would have the benefit of space. also with the new LED technology out there grow lights are better. I start some of my vegetables indoors under LED lights. What used to be about 200 watts for my lighting purposes, is now around 50 watts. Perhaps the lack of sunlight isn't even an issue these days?

Cost vs. 24 hour (if the plants tolerate it) light and a shorter growing cycle/higher yield?

Possibly. I only grow a few types of vegetables, but the ones I do grow (Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Squash, Bell Peppers) tend to only need 8 -12 hours or so for light, and have done very well indoors I never actually used artificial light all the way through the growing process though.
I have noticed that for those plants they do grow a bit better with large amount of light, but not much better.

Yesterday, I started indoors under grow lights. My led lights do grow or bloom and cover a 4x4 foot area. This is the second year and I hope I've learned some lessons.

This is a test

You posted the same two pictures three times each, just so you know.

Were those tomatoes started indoors? They look good and tall. I've been starting plants indoors for the last few years now, and each year I've learned from past mistakes, but still getting the hang of it.

Welcome @Blader! Is this the same Blader from SSP?

Yes, the tomatoes were started indoors, near the end of March. Some, sweet millions, approached 6 feet. I'll post more, observations and and images, when I get the hang of this site. And yes, I'm the same Blader. I made the conscious decision to let my history follow me.
I deleted my messed up post with images in this thread because the more I edited it the worse it got.

There may not be an abundance of fruit, but they're indeterminates, and I have, previous to August 2, picked a lot of fruit.
5 of the 6 tubs along the fence are sweet millions. The tub in the foreground is a Stupice, a Czech heirloom.

Tnx - one thing I like about most gardeners is sharing knowledge.
The photo below are 4 tumblers - they're great for balconies/small places.
