A thread for Taza, the development in Tsuut'ina Nation that Canderel is doing. There are 3 villages, Taza Park, Taza Crossing and Taza Exchange. This is another comprehensively planned suburban area, so the thread will be similar to the West District and Trinity Hills threads, where I use the first few posts to track the progress of individual projects within each village. Taza Park is the village that is adjacent to the existing Grey Eagle Resort and Casino. I will do my best to keep up on the projects that happen here, but as it is a jurisdiction I am not super familiar with (Tsuut'ina Nation) I will be relying on just checking the development website/newsletter to keep up on things, as I am not familiar with their permitting and notification process.

I'm writing a series on the Nation's developments, starting from the origins of the Nations economic development planning in the 1970s, the influence of the ring road on those plans from the 1980s, and then eventually looking at the current planning for the developments.

Part 1 is here: https://calgaryringroad.wordpress.com/2017/12/29/the-road-to-development-part-1/ and covers the earliest period and development plans from 1970.

I think there's a misconception that the Nation is only now realizing that they can develop along side the road, and that the development is a result of the road. The truth is exactly the opposite; the Nation has wanted to leverage the ring road for economic benefit since the 1970s, and only agreed to the ring road land deal specifically because of the benefits such a road would bring to the Nation. The road is only being built (on the reserve) because of these developments.

Since more details about the development plans will be coming out soon, I wanted to begin to tell this story. and I think Calgarians will benefit from understanding the history and context around this project. And as a resident of an adjacent community, I can't wait for the project to get underway!
 
I'm worried about the chance of success with this plan and eventually being developed as a big box/casino hellhole . I'm also concerned that it will be successful. It's a bit of a wasted location for some of the proposed items that would be better more central.

I look forward to reading your article. I have to thing that this means there is a very strong probability of this moving forward. If it does, my biggest hope is that this brings more and better interactions between Calgarians and T'suu Tina residents. We're far too aloof for how close we are too one another.

Yeah that would be a real shame. I hope they can get something genuinely unique and worthwhile out of the development plans.

I agree entirely. I went to the Nation's Christmas Feast last week, and it was fantastic. I was encouraged by seeing some from Calgary and Rocky View (though disappointed that no representatives from the City were there). I think the ring road and the developments will start to play a role in bringing the two communities together.
 
This is good news for that part of the city, and something that could be very good for Tsuut'ina nation . Here's a question maybe @5seconds can answer as you seem to know a lot about this. What are the plans for the rental residential? Will they be open for anyone (non-nation members) to live there? It'd be kinda coo to have a place so close to the Weaselhead.
 
Any idea on what an "experience centre" would be?

Somewhere in the reserve, I'm hoping for something like Fort Whyte in Winnipeg. Plus some more cultural and maybe a museum type thing to promote and enhance education about the Nation. I think adjacent to the Weaselhead would be a great location for that though, with direct access to some interpretive trails.
