Statscan numbers

Not sure if it's been posted but it looks like Calgary's CMA population grew by ~2% this past year or roughly 30,000 people (July 1 2019- July1 2020). StatsCan now puts our CMA population north of 1.5 Million at 1,543,283.

Might be unrealistic, but as we have seen relatively consistent population growth over the last 20 years, seemingly independent of economic conditions:
My calculation if we grow with the same consistency over the next 20 year period will have the CMA at 2,613,900 by 2040.

At 1.8%/ year over the next 20 years it's 2,200,000, with the CMA getting to the 2 million mark somewhere around 2035.

Pretty wild that our population continues to have some of the highest growth in the country despite having a slumping economy for ~6 years.

I have a feeling Calgary is going to have some explosive population growth in the next 5 years as things in oil and gas are starting to look a bit more promising (oil price increasing, new pipelines close to completion, lack of overall investment in the industry for the past few years, increasing demand despite the rhetoric that "oil is dead") in addition to a steadily growing tech sector.

The cost of housing in Toronto and Vancouver is pushing people out as the average income earner cant compete there anymore. Calgary seems like a logical place to move to if more jobs start opening up

It's too bad that our CMA doesn't include Okotoks, High River, Strathmore and everything in between. That would possibly add another 100k to our population.
Pretty close, it would be somewhere around 80K. In the last census, the Foothills MD along with High river, and Okotoks etc,, added up to 77K IIRC. I'm guessing that number would be more like 80-82K by now.

I got ~85,000, +/- ~3000 for movements since the last survey. That would bring the total of Calgary and Area to ~1.63 million!

IMO our CMA will be expanded to include most of those regions in the next 10 years. Edmonton's is way bigger, and Calgary proper is mostly growing in those directions at the moment.

Agreed, and yeah it shouldn't be far off. It's a topic that has come up a few times. When you look at Foothills MD it seems obvious that it would be part of Calgary's CMA, but due to the formulae used by statscan it doesn't quite make it. Mostly because there is a fair amount of work travel between High River and Okotoks which offsets the percentage to/from Calgary. The XL Beef plant in High River is a large employer and maybe this is the reason...not sure. You would think there would be a lot of people from Calgary who work there, but maybe not high enough percentage.

Does that statistic include the surrounding municipalities or is that figure specific to Calgary proper?

It's the StatCan defined Calgary Census Metropolitan Area: Calgary + Airdrie + Cochrane + Chestermere + Rockyview County.

It does not include any other surrounding areas. This is why the government of Alberta created the Calgary Metropolitan Region which includes Okotoks, High River, Foothills County, and Strathmore. Total population approx. 1,620,000 within an area around 500 km2 smaller than the Edmonton Census Metropolitan Area and approx. 200,000 bigger population.
