New Stadium Discussion Thread

Tbh a combined field house and stadium (up to a certain size) has some economies of scale. Not a huge amount but some. Definitely some economies of imagination. Two projects that never seem to get across the line, mashed together, become successful.

Something like Forsyth Barr in New Zealand still appeals.

The price tag for the CalgaryNext style fieldhouse would be very prohibitive to a lot of people.

Something that should be brought up when it comes to this discussion is the mayor and premier soft launching a 2038 Olympic bid.

The challenge with that is they want a competition sized fieldhouse, and a competition size track doesn't fit a football field within it. Still prefer something on the Stampede grounds. We already reserved a huge amount of land for a 10 day event, we should be able to adapt it to host another 8 games a year and occasional concerts. Building another Stadium that is rarely used on a prime piece of land would be a bad use of space.

I could be wrong but I think the new CFL field dimensions fit with a running track... but having that track makes for an awful large distance to the field from the front row, see Commonwealth in Edmonton.

You're right. I don't mind having a track in a new stadium, but would still prefer an indoor field house that's more focused as a recreation and competition facility, which we do really need.

Agreed, there are much better synergies to multi purpose ~25k stadium seats for a few different kinds of outdoor sports events. There's going to be some compromises no matter what, but Stampede Grandstand makes the scope of the project way more manageable - you only need another ~10k seats in a new infield, plus field conversion (something already managed fine in many stadiums).

You could even make it a lot smaller than that - maybe just 5k permanent seats and suites. Then do endzone bleachers which can be relocated for use during Stampede events. And to get really creative, build the roof of the new infield to be multi-purpose: it can be a premium patio space (beer gardens, etc), or you can crane in/out ~20 row sections of bleachers - or some combination of each. Stampede time it might be all patio. Football season mostly bleachers, but beer gardens or kids zone sections at each end. Special events you can totally fill it up with bleachers.

Someone just needs to tell the Stampede that the track and rodeo configuration is the one that is temporary, the Stadium and Field bubble is the one that will be used for 345 days a year.
