General Construction Updates

It's interesting to see the city say what others have mentioned and I think the framing of this response looks worse than it actually is. The discussion of the Marda Loop disruption has probably had a negative impact to the business themselves because of the perception of the area is worse than reality. That's not to say we shouldn't criticize though. I am curious why all this work is being done separately. Telus is a bit different, but doesn't Enmax and the city typically coordinate on these upgrades? I assume this is to bury the electrical poles on 1st Ave as part of the Main Street Project.

I don't know the details but all of these could be different enough that there wasn't any overlap. Utility power goes in a different place than fibre and neither of those are necessarily near the curb. The City is right, Lukes is probably best advised not to put out a post that says "don't come here any time soon".

If the Marda Loop businesses had gotten together and marketed the area as being Open for Business, then that could've gone a long way to keep people coming and instead they have consistently been announcing how bad things are.

What might seem like an opportunity for savings (only repaving once) likely misattributes way more costs to paving, and ignores costs for coordination (likely no net decrease in the number of days of disruption, plus potential for stretching timelines and costs by having crews on schedule and idle (if one project slips by a day, then the next slips by a day too, but the crew still needs to be around).

When looking at the work schedule further, it looks like the Main Street work is done this year, so I don't think there are any closures next year for streetscape. Similarly, seems like having Enmax and Telus there now is scheduling the work together, just not concurrently, which as others mentioned may not even be possible.

They are probably finishing the utility and alignment work this fall, then will come back in the spring and do the final finishing work. That will be quick though, should only be a coulple weeks per block...

Soon to be some of Calgary’s best inner city hoods.
Fun fact, in general communities south of Fish Creek park are closer to downtown Okotoks than downtown Calgary, in some cases much closer.

Edit: in fact some addresses in Cranston are closer to downtown High River than dt Calgary
