General Construction Updates

MLA and Mplan students are being told winter 2025/2026 to be there. Also temporarily moving to the current downtown CBDL building for the fall.

So they'll be ready for next school year, quick fix but a fix was needed. Still this influx of more children downtown isn't going away. I'd like to see a permanent solution in some empty office building.
THey should expand the school into the current parking lot and into the playground. Parking can go underground and the playground can go on the roof. They could triple the size of the school easily!

I would love to see an office building get converted into a school. I'm assuming if a field and gymnasium is a requirement, it would be an issue. Gymnasiums are a bit easier to deal with, and could be build above ground, but a playing field is tougher tom implement.
There are a few office buildings along 10th/11th ave that have good sized parking lots that could be turned into a playing field. This is one site that comes to mind which could be turned into a K-9 school with the adjacent lot to the west turned into a field and gymnasium. It's fairly central to everything and should easily be large enough to house K-9.

Netted sports courts on the roof just like they do in New York.

I live in the beltline and the number of families with young children has skyrocketed from my observations just walking around everyday.
Here's a bit of data to support your observations, from 2021 and 2011. To keep things simple, I only look at census tracts between 14th and 8th Street, Bow River to 17th Ave. So roughly the area centred around Connaught School:

Here's the 2011 to 2021 comparison:

In this small area, that's an increase in demand of about 0.5 of a typical elementary and junior high each, and about 5 or 10 new daycares over 10 years. That's enormous and would be noticeable in an area of about 30 blocks. All other areas around also saw more children too.

Keep in mind, all these numbers are before the recent growth spurt, the Ukrainian refugee crisis etc. So there is a legitimate crisis brewing in school capacity in this area (and others) as a result of failing to respond to these trends and invest in public school capacity. Thankfully portables and other interventions seem likely in the relatively near future.

Here’s another one from 37th and Kilkenny rd. I’d look these up but I do most of my internet activity from my phone.
