Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

It is not one of the sites Ruby Liu bid on. However, there are other sites than the one she bid on that have had bidders. To this point in the process those locations have not been revealed.

Damn.. Time to make some phone calls!

Are there any location in Calgary she did bid on? I can only see that concept working well in cities with high disposable income. Calgary, Vancouver and TO basically.

CF is going to fight like hell to keep her out of their malls, I actually only see her concept starting in the malls she owns (Tsawwassen Mills, Woodgrove Centre, and Mayfair Shopping Centre), they'll act as a POC and if they're successful maybe other malls will be willing to lease her a space.

I don't think her idea will work in Canada. The biggest difference is that malls in Asia are often attached to transit stations, they have massive food spaces for people passing through after work. And culturally, people do more outdoors activity and spend less time in malls in general compared to Asia.

I really hope that building stays as retail. Any major international retailers that can take a few floors of retail that should move here? It's too bad Nordstrom failed, maybe Saks?

I actually think something like the Ruby Liu concept would be good here. Some retail, some food, some lifestyle, and some arcade or place like the Rec Room would be very cool to have in this old building. If South Centre can have it where the old Sears was why not here.

Saks was owned by HBC then spun off. And with Holt already downtown, that's probably too much luxury in such a small area. I wonder if parts of it could work with an expanded Simons. Simons is currently stretched across many floors and a bit cumbersome to navigate.

Would love to be proven wrong, but her concept is more of an entire mall. Pretty sure she can't put food vendors in many of these locations because it directly competes against the food court. Some of the comments in this article is also quite... something. It's pretty incredible this many landlords oppose her plan and would rather leave the anchor space vacant than have whatever she's planning. And sounds like she bid for Market, Chinook and SouthCentre
