Calgary International Airport

Yup, probably all the long haul that we can handle with their fortress hub and the operational limitations of YYC (elevation mainly) before it heads to the other major spots. I'd have to think it would be YYZ before YVR.
Agreed on YYZ. With the Delta/AF/KLM investment, WS will likely join their transatlantic JV, which is really the only way to compete on transatlantic routes. That would give them a Canadian partner to compete with the AC/UA/LH JV.

Edit: I see they've already taken a small step with VS, which is part of the Delta TATL JV.

With YVR so close to YYC it would make sense for WS to try for routes out of YYZ. Who knows maybe they’ll throw YEG a bone and get them a route to LGW.
In YYZ they have to compete with the Air Canada super connector while depending on mostly O&D traffic. You have to be pretty confident to do it.

I bet what happens is Toronto Calgary Dreamliner flights for efficiency and keeping air frame hours up, and doing sun flying from Toronto on Dreamliners rather than doubling up flights.

Sun flying from YVR + YYZ is pretty much a guaranteed with the new Dreamliners for the winter schedule, maybe even YEG on a lesser frequency. Same for summer European flying, I think we can anticipate at least a few routes from YVR and YYZ to supplement those to YYC - I'm thinking things like YVR-LGW or YYZ-BCN like they served on the 767s pre-COVID. I know folks over on the Edmonton Airport thread are manifesting a YEG-LGW return which would be nice, but I am a skeptic.

If they join the Delta TATL JV, they have feeder traffic from Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Air France and KLM. It won't just be O&D

A return of LGW is the only scenario I see for YEG, but it's far from guaranteed of course.

Any guesses on possible new YYC routes? Like maybe something for China?

I'd be interested in some fifth freedom flights. Calgary-Taipei-Hong Kong. Calgary-Manila-Bangkok or Singapore. Calgary-Europe-Delhi (Copenhagen, Rome, Athens, Zurich), Calgary-Quito/Lima-Buenos Aires.

For direct flights (minus the 737 European destinations out of Halifax that will likely be converted to 787 out of Calgary): gotta have one to Australia and mainland China...despite the circuitous routing to Beijing currently. Bogota makes a tremendous amount of sense too, but I think that's comfortably within range of the 737 Max 7. I'd presume Turkish will eventually reach Calgary from Istanbul. Maybe a second Japan destination like Osaka-Kansai?

Beijing would be a pretty sure thing, considering it was served previously by Hainan until the pandemic messed that up.
Beijing isn’t likely until WS can use Russian airspace. Right now it requires detouring around Korea adding like 2-3 hours to the journey.

Shanghai is far more likely - and WestJet even has a partner who has a massive hub there.
